"Detroit, 1984' today's poem

Detroit, 1984

In January 1969

we agreed to meet

greet the new year of 1984

in an abandoned warehouse in Detroit

-a perfect gesture

in the mind’s eyes

of Midwest college

freshmen absurdists

But by the time

that Orwell milestone

arrived

we were all long gone

no longer conspirators

likely no man would have

left wife

children

life

for such symbolic foolery

with such marginal reason

But I did think about it, sure

many times 01/06/69 onward

and on 01/01/84

and I imagine

Larry, Mike, Terry, Ken, and Doug did too

at least they did

in my magical

revisionist history

of the 20th Century

where naïve chords of freedom

ring on in fleeting years
