in
a rowboat squirms Captain Quigley
aerial
fish spiral, jaws champing, teethspray
it’s
a painting I think: a fine one, photorealistic
the
good captain looks like he might speak
a
fish camp looms in the landscape, in chiseled relief
but
is incapable of speech, remembering something
he
doesn’t want to fish today: he sees something ashore
the
lake isn’t blue, nor is the sky: uncertain in time
flowers
bloom somewhere else some other painting
the
look on his face makes me remember this portrait again
I
look back when the frame is empty
so
slowly the gallery empties
